Description
The VE6022P1 is an Emerson DeltaV M-series modular industrial Ethernet switch — a 12-slot, Layer 2 Gigabit chassis that lives at the heart of a DeltaV Area Control Network. It is not a fixed-port office switch and it is not a managed Layer 3 box: it is the ACN aggregation point where controllers, operator workstations, engineering stations, application servers and historians meet. The defining detail is the one that catches people out. The VE6022P1 ships as an empty chassis — twelve SFP cages, no ports active, no copper ports on the faceplate. Until you install at least one transceiver, it is electrically a very expensive piece of rack fill. That is not a defect; it is the product’s whole design logic. A process plant rarely needs twelve identical ports, and a fixed copper switch would force either a patchwork of media converters or a long multimode run on a 100 m copper budget. The VE6022P1 lets one chassis carry the short cabinet jumpers, the plant-floor fiber and the long single-mode links side by side, all inside the Emerson-qualified envelope.
Application Scenarios
A regional refinery expanded its DeltaV control room from a single operator station to a redundant pair, added a historian and an application server, and had to bring three remote I/O cabinets onto the same ACN at distances of 80 m, 1.2 km and 6.4 km. Buying three different switches would have meant three vendor support contracts, three firmware streams and a network the DeltaV diagnostics could not fully see. The VE6022P1 solved it in one rack unit: VE6025 Gigabit copper SFPs for the workstation and server legs, VE6023 multimode for the near cabinet, VE6024 single-mode for the far one. The port mix was built once, documented once, and the ACN stayed a single Emerson-supported fabric. When a fiber splice degraded six months later, the fault showed up as one link-down event on one cage — not a mystery broadcast storm across the control room.
Parameter
| Main Parameters | Value / Description |
|---|---|
| Product Model | VE6022P1 — P1 = North American AC cordset (P2 UK / P3 Europe / P4 Australia) |
| Manufacturer | Emerson, DeltaV™ M-series network infrastructure |
| Product Category | Modular industrial Ethernet switch chassis, Layer 2, store-and-forward |
| Port Structure | 12 × SFP cages, all empty at shipment — no fixed RJ45, no fixed fiber; chassis is unusable until at least one SFP is seated |
| Slot Rate | 1000 Mbps per cage; cage wiring also accepts selected 100 Mbps SFP types (VE6026 / VE6027) where the link budget allows |
| Transceiver Rules | Any mix of VE6023 / VE6024 / VE6025 / VE6026 / VE6027; use VE6101 blank caps on every unused cage to preserve EMC and airflow |
| Copper Reach | VE6025 1000BASE-T SFP → 100 m per link over Cat 5e/6; the copper distance limit belongs to the SFP, not the chassis |
| Multimode Reach | VE6023 1000BASE-SX SFP → 550 m (62.5/125 µm OM1 short-run grade), the workhorse for cabinet-to-cabinet fiber |
| Single-Mode Reach | VE6024 1000BASE-LX SFP → 10 km on 9/125 µm SM; the link that removes the media converter from the BOM |
| 100 Mb SFP Option | VE6026 / VE6027 100 Mbps SFP, multimode to ~2 km; useful for a legacy device whose PHY cannot negotiate gigabit |
| Forwarding Role | Layer 2 switching inside the ACN; DeltaV redundancy and path behaviour are governed by the DeltaV network design, not by STP or dynamic routing on the switch |
| Power Input | 100–240 V AC, 50/60 Hz, internal industrial PSU sized for the fitted SFP load — the P-code selects the inlet cord, not the voltage range |
| Redundancy Fit | Supports redundant DeltaV ACN topologies; a second VE6022P1 or a DeltaV Smart Switch pair is the usual pattern, cabled per the Emerson network drawing |
| Diagnostics | Per-cage link/activity and per-module status readable at the chassis; link-state and fault events feed the DeltaV network-monitoring view rather than a CLI show command |
| Mounting | 19″ rack mount, 1U class, control-room or telecom-style bay; dress the fiber so bend radius and the patch-panel strain relief carry the load, not the SFP latch |
| Environment | Process-control cabinet duty: 24 × 7 continuous operation, EMC/immunity qualified for the DeltaV installation environment. Exact ambient and humidity ratings must be read from the unit nameplate before the fit-check |
| Dimensions / Weight | Verify against the physical nameplate. Channel listings conflict: one camp quotes ~138 × 73 × 115 mm / 0.57 kg (a bare-module view), another quotes a 1U 19″ frame at roughly 440–483 × 44 × 250–310 mm / 3–5 kg. They describe different assemblies, not a rounding error |
| Slot & Cage Care | SFP cages are the wear item. Inspect for bent spring fingers and contaminated optics before declaring a chassis fault; a dirty VE6023 looks exactly like a dead VE6022P1 |
| Lifecycle | Legacy / maintenance-grade stocking item; the current DeltaV Smart Switch family is the documented forward path. Still specified and supported in existing M-series ACN designs |
