Description
The 1606-XL240E is an Allen-Bradley (Rockwell Automation) Bulletin 1606-XL switched mode power supply delivering 240 W of regulated 24 V DC at 10 A from a wide-range AC input. It is a DIN rail-mounted, convection-cooled unit built to power PLCs, I/O, HMIs, sensors and field instrumentation inside industrial control cabinets.Rockwell lists it as the Power Supply XL 240 W, discontinued since October 2017, with 1606-XLE240E named as the direct replacement. That status is precisely why 1606-XL240E remains in demand: thousands of panels were built around it, and a like-for-like swap is far cheaper than re-engineering a cabinet’s power architecture.
Application Scenarios
A water treatment plant has a control panel powering a CompactLogix processor, remote I/O adapters, an HMI and a bank of solenoid valves. The 24 V supply is years old, the cabinet runs warm in summer, and one morning the PLC resets during a pump start — no fault logged, no obvious cause. The maintenance team checks the program, the communications and the field devices, and only later discovers the supply had been quietly derating in a 65 °C cabinet until it could no longer hold the load through the inrush. This is the daily reality where 1606-XL240E operates. It is the foundation layer that everything else depends on, and its failure modes are deceptive: a sagging 24 V rail shows up as random PLC resets, nuisance comms faults, sensors dropping out and outputs chattering — never as “power supply failed.” Because the unit derates above 60 °C, a panel that was adequately specified on paper can fall short once filters clog, cabinet fans fail or a second heat source is added to the enclosure. The second pain point is procurement and lifecycle. 1606-XL240E is discontinued and marked non-repairable by Rockwell, so a plant that loses one during an outage cannot simply reorder from the distributor. The choice becomes an available tested spare now, or a migration to the XLE replacement later — and knowing that 1606-XLE240E is the designated direct replacement lets a plant plan the migration deliberately instead of under pressure.
Parameter
| Main Parameters | Value/Description |
|---|---|
| Product Model | 1606-XL240E (Bulletin 1606-XL, Power Supply XL 240 W) |
| Manufacturer | Allen-Bradley / Rockwell Automation |
| Product Category | Switched mode power supply module / DIN rail industrial PSU |
| Output Voltage | 24–28 V DC adjustable via front-panel potentiometer, factory preset approx. 24.5 V — lets you compensate for voltage drop on long cable runs |
| Output Current and Power | 10 A at 24 V (240 W) continuous up to 60 °C ambient; 12 A (288 W) available up to 45 °C or with forced cooling — a built-in 20 % reserve |
| Input Voltage | AC 100–120 / 200–240 V, switch-selectable or auto-ranging depending on hardware revision; also accepts DC 240–375 V with the selector in the 230 V position |
| Input Frequency | 47–63 Hz (50/60 Hz ±6 %) |
| Efficiency and Losses | Typically 90 % at 230 V AC and full load, approx. 26.7 W losses — directly determines how much heat the cabinet must reject |
| Ripple and Noise | Better than 30 mVpp (20 MHz bandwidth, 50 Ω measurement) — clean enough for sensitive analog instrumentation |
| Hold-up Time | Approx. 25 ms at 196 V AC, 24 V / 10 A — bridges short supply dips so logic does not reset |
| Protection and Monitoring | Short-circuit, open-circuit and overload protection; overvoltage protection typically 35 V; power-back immunity to 34 V; overload design avoids fold-back “sticking” so secondary fuses trip reliably |
| Parallel Capability | Supported for load sharing, up to 5 units — enables capacity growth or redundancy |
| Environmental and Mechanical | 0 to +70 °C operating with 6 W/K derating above +60 °C, −40 to +85 °C storage, max 95 % RH non-condensing; natural convection cooling, no fan; 35 mm DIN rail (EN 60715); approx. 120 × 124 × 102 mm, approx. 980 g; IP20; long-life 105 °C electrolytic capacitors |
| Reliability | MTBF approximately 425,000 hours (SN 29500, 24 V / 10 A, 230 V AC, +40 °C) |
