Description

The 1756-L72S​ is a GuardLogix 5572S safety processor manufactured by Allen-Bradley (Rockwell Automation) for the ControlLogix platform (Bulletin 1756). It is a rack-based programmable automation controller with 4 MB of user memory that integrates standard control and safety control in a single 1756 chassis, eliminating the need for a separate safety PLC. With support for up to 128 I/O modules, 4000 total I/O points and a 0.2 ms I/O response time, it is the mid-memory safety controller in the 5572S family for machine and process applications that must meet SIL 2 and SIL 3 requirements without splitting the control architecture.

Application Scenarios

Consider a high-speed bottling line where a guard-door interlock, a light curtain, two emergency-stop circuits and a safe torque-off function on the main drive must all reach SIL 3, while the same controller also runs the conveyor sequencing, the filler PID loops and the HMI recipe handling. A traditional design would put a safety PLC next to the standard PLC, double the engineering effort, double the spares and force the two systems to communicate across a fragile boundary. The 1756-L72S​ collapses that into one controller in one 1756 chassis: the safety routines run in the safety portion of the processor, the standard routines run in the standard portion, and both share the same tag database and the same Studio 5000 project. When a guard door opens, the safety routine drops the safe torque-off output in a certified, deterministic path while the standard routine logs the event and stops the recipe.
