Product Overview
The Allen-Bradley 1786-RPTD is a ControlNet coaxial repeater module produced by Rockwell Automation, engineered to regenerate and amplify ControlNet signals on RG-6 or RG-59 75 Ω coaxial cable trunks, thereby extending the physical reach of a ControlNet network beyond the standard 300-meter (1,000-foot) maximum segment length and providing galvanic isolation between network sections. The 1786-RPTD is a transparent, store-and-forward signal regenerator—it receives the ControlNet NUI (Network Update Interval) and NUT (Network Update Time) scheduled packets as well as unscheduled messages from one BNC port, reconstructs the waveform, and retransmits it on the second BNC port with correct impedance matching and signal integrity. This makes the 1786-RPTD an essential component in large-scale ControlNet installations such as power generation plants, oil & gas production facilities, and continuous-process lines where I/O drops, PowerFlex drives, and ControlLogix/PLC-5E nodes are distributed across physically separated buildings or long conveyor runs. The 1786-RPTD operates at the standard ControlNet data rate of 1.5 Mbps (fixed for ControlNet) and is fully compliant with the ControlNet International specification (CIP Sync optional in surrounding nodes but transparent to the repeater). It is powered by an external 24 V DC supply (typical draw ~120–200 mA) via a removable terminal block and mounts on a standard 35 mm DIN rail or panel. Front-panel LEDs indicate Power, Signal Present on Port A, and Signal Present on Port B, allowing field technicians to quickly verify that the upstream and downstream ControlNet segments are active. A key operational advantage of the 1786-RPTD is its ability to break ground loops: because the input and output sides are transformer-coupled within the module, differing ground potentials between two physically separated ControlNet segments do not induce noise or common-mode offset onto the coax shield—a frequent cause of intermittent communication errors in multi-building industrial sites. Up to a limited number of cascaded repeaters may be used per ControlNet specification (typically up to 5 repeaters in a path between any two nodes, subject to total round-trip timing), and the 1786-RPTD is compatible with all ControlNet Series B and Series C nodes, taps (1786-TPS, 1786-TPYS), and media (coax or fiber via media converters on either side). Whether deployed to extend a crane-mounted I/O drop past 300 m, to interconnect separate plant areas with different electrical grounding systems, or to create redundant isolated branches for maintenance isolation, the 1786-RPTD preserves the deterministic scheduled-data behavior that is the hallmark of ControlNet while removing the physical-layer limitations of coaxial attenuation and ground potential difference.
