Description
The ABB TB852 (Order No: 3BSC950263R1) is a specialized RCU (Remote Control Unit) Link Interface Module designed exclusively for the ABB AC 800M control system platform. While often mistakenly referred to as a “redundant controller,” the TB852 actually serves as the critical communication gateway that enables PM86x series controllers (including redundant pairs like PM867) to connect to distributed S800 I/O stations over long distances via fiber optic or shielded twisted pair cables. In redundant system architectures, the TB852 plays a pivotal role in establishing diverse communication paths, ensuring that if one network segment fails, the controller can still access vital field data through an alternate route. This module supports various media types (RJ45. ST/BF fiber), acts as a media converter, and provides the necessary termination for the RCU bus, making it indispensable for large-scale process automation projects in industries like power generation, oil & gas, and water treatment where system availability is paramount.
Application Scenarios
In a 600MW supercritical coal-fired power plant, the boiler control system utilizes a fully redundant ABB AC 800M architecture with dual PM867 controllers. The plant spans a large area, with critical I/O points (like furnace pressure transmitters and fuel valve actuators) located up to 2 kilometers away from the main control room. To connect these remote S800 I/O clusters to the redundant controllers while maintaining high availability, engineers deployed ABB TB852 modules at both the controller end and the remote I/O end. The TB852 modules converted the electrical signals from the controller baseplate into optical signals for transmission over single-mode fiber, creating a noise-immune, long-distance link. When a construction accident severed one of the fiber cables, the redundancy protocol automatically switched communication to the secondary path (routed through another TB852 on a different physical route), preventing any loss of control or visibility. The plant continued to operate safely without a trip, demonstrating the TB852’s crucial role in enabling robust, fault-tolerant communication networks for redundant control systems.
