Main Features and Advantages
Proven processor architecture: The Schneider Electric 140CPU4321A pairs a 66 MHz 486-class CPU with an on-board maths coprocessor, so floating-point calculations, PID loops, totalisers and scaling run natively in hardware rather than being emulated in software. Combined with 896 kB of internal RAM, that gives enough headroom for substantial continuous and sequential control programs with room left for diagnostics, alarming and recipe handling.Communication without gateways: Two Modbus RS232 ports and a Modbus Plus port are built in, covering the three connections most Quantum installations actually need: a programming terminal, an HMI or instrument link, and a peer-to-peer plant network. When a project needs more, the 140CPU4321A accepts up to six NOM, NOE, CR or NMS modules in the same rack, which turns one processor into a communication hub for serial devices, Ethernet nodes and third-party systems.Scalable I/O architecture: With 64 local I/O words, 500 distributed I/O words per network across up to 63 drops, and 31 remote drops, the 140CPU4321A covers everything from a compact single-rack machine to a geographically dispersed plant. Because distributed and remote drops are addressed over the Quantum bus, expansion does not require rewiring back to the CPU rack.Retention and security: A 250 ms watchdog detects a stalled program and forces a controlled response instead of leaving outputs frozen in an unsafe state, while the keyed front switch prevents an unauthorised or accidental change of operating mode. The 1.2 Ah lithium battery holds the user program and real-time clock through extended power outages for up to ten years, so a plant restart does not begin with a program reload.Industrial ruggedness: Certified to FM Class 1 Division 2 for hazardous locations, UL 508 and CSA C22.2 No. 142, with 4 kV contact and 8 kV air electrostatic discharge immunity and 10 V/m radiated field immunity, the 140CPU4321A meets the electromagnetic and environmental requirements of heavy process industry rather than only light manufacturing.
