Rockwell Automation 1734-ADN POINT I/O DeviceNet Communication Adapter with 500 kbit/s Network Performance

Product Overview

The Allen-Bradley 1734-ADN is a DeviceNet network adapter belonging to the Rockwell Automation POINT I/O (Bulletin 1734) distributed I/O family. It is installed as the leftmost starter module of a POINT I/O assembly and performs two critical roles simultaneously: it acts as a slave device on the main DeviceNet network, and as the master of the POINTBus backplane that carries both data and power to every module installed to its right. Through this dual role, the 1734-ADN consolidates an entire rack of digital, analog and specialty I/O modules into a single DeviceNet node, dramatically reducing network address consumption and field wiring costs.Engineered for cabinet-mounted distributed control architectures, the 1734-ADN supports communication rates of 125 kbit/s, 250 kbit/s and 500 kbit/s with automatic baud detection, and it offers a maximum I/O data capacity of 248 input bytes and 248 output bytes. Configuration is performed entirely in software through RSNetWorx for DeviceNet after the EDS file is registered, since the module itself carries no DIP switches. Node addressing is set by the two decimal rotary thumbwheels on the front of the device, covering the standard DeviceNet range of 0 to 63.The value of the Allen-Bradley 1734-ADN in an automation system lies in its ability to bring I/O closer to the machine while keeping the network simple. A single adapter can address up to 63 POINT I/O modules, equivalent to a maximum of 504 I/O points, which allows machine builders to place small I/O islands next to conveyors, packaging stations or process skids and connect them with one five-conductor DeviceNet trunk cable instead of long homerun bundles. Combined with Auto Device Replacement (ADR), which automatically downloads stored configuration into a replacement adapter at power-up, the module reduces commissioning time and shortens mean time to repair in production environments.

Main Features and Advantages

Compact high-density node consolidation: The 1734-ADN presents an entire POINT I/O assembly to the DeviceNet scanner as a single node address, which means a rack containing dozens of modules consumes only one of the 64 available DeviceNet addresses. For plants running large distributed architectures, this single characteristic often determines whether an existing network can absorb an expansion without a second scanner card. Adapter-based POINT I/O also supports expansion to 63 modules, whereas interface-based alternatives count each module separately.Fast commissioning and zero-downtime replacement: The 1734-ADN ships with AutoBaud detection, so the module locks onto the trunk speed of 125, 250 or 500 kbit/s automatically without manual intervention. Combined with Auto Device Replacement, a failed adapter can be swapped by maintenance personnel and re-parameterised automatically at power-up, because the scanner retains the stored configuration. The two decimal rotary switches on the front face allow the node address to be set in seconds without any programming device, and the module requires no DIP switch or jumper configuration at all.Clear onboard diagnostics: The Allen-Bradley 1734-ADN carries three red/green status indicators covering adapter status, DeviceNet network status and POINTBus backplane status, plus two green power indicators for system power and field power. This arrangement lets a technician distinguish at a glance between a network-side fault, a backplane fault and a simple loss of field power, which substantially reduces troubleshooting time compared with single-LED devices.Robust electrical design for industrial environments: The 1734-ADN operates over a wide 10–28.8V DC range and tolerates inrush currents up to 6 A for 10 ms, with reverse polarity protection on the input. Basic insulation rated at 50V continuous and type tested at 750V AC for 60 s protects the DeviceNet side from field-side disturbances. With an operating range of −20 °C to +55 °C and certifications covering CE, cUL, UL, China CCC, IECEx and the Registro Italiano Navale marine register, the module is approved for both general industrial and more demanding installations.Reduced installation cost: Because the 1734-ADN distributes both 5V backplane logic power and 24V field power along the POINTBus, one adapter and one five-conductor trunk cable replace long parallel wiring runs. Removable terminal blocks on the wiring bases allow a complete assembly to be swapped without disturbing field wiring, and the mechanical keying on each base prevents a module from being inserted into the wrong slot.
