PCD2.M110 – Saia-Burgess Controls PLC with PG5 Programming, BACnet/IP & Modbus TCP Ready

The PCD2.M110 is a compact, modular PLC from Saia-Burgess Controls’ PCD2 (Programmable Control Device 2nd generation) family. Designed for small to mid-sized automation tasks, it features integrated communication ports, expandable I/O, and support for open protocols—making it ideal for building automation (BAS), energy monitoring, packaging machines, and laboratory equipment.
Although now under the ABB umbrella, the PCD2.M110 continues to use Saia’s PG5 programming environment and maintains full compatibility with the existing PCD ecosystem. It is not natively part of ABB’s AC 800M or System 800xA architecture, but can be integrated at the supervisory level via standard industrial protocols.

Description

Application Scenarios

In a university campus in Germany, aging pneumatic HVAC controls were replaced with a decentralized system using PCD2.M110 controllers in each lecture hall. Each unit monitored CO₂ sensors (via 0–10 V input modules), controlled damper actuators, and communicated room status over BACnet/IP to a central building management system (BMS). The built-in web server allowed facility staff to troubleshoot alarms via smartphone without specialized software. Because the PCD2.M110 supported Modbus TCP, it also fed energy consumption data to an ABB Ability™ Edifice analytics platform—demonstrating seamless coexistence within an ABB-connected ecosystem.

Integration with ABB Systems

While the PCD2.M110 is not a native System 800xA component, it can be integrated via:

OPC UA Server: Use SBC’s SBE OPC Server or third-party tools (e.g., Kepware) to expose PCD2 tags to 800xA.

Modbus TCP: Configure the PCD2.M110 as a Modbus server; connect via ABB CI854A or NCOM01 communication module.

MQTT/REST (with firmware extensions): For cloud-based ABB Ability™ applications.

This makes the PCD2.M110 a strategic edge device in hybrid architectures—especially in building automation, where ABB leverages SBC’s domain expertise.

Summary

The PCD2.M110 is a versatile, protocol-rich micro-PLC from Saia-Burgess Controls, now part of the ABB Group. While it operates independently of ABB’s core DCS platforms, its open communication capabilities make it an excellent choice for edge control in buildings, machinery, and small processes—especially where integration with ABB’s broader electrification and digital offerings (like Ability™) is desired.

✅ Ideal for: Building automation, OEM machinery, lab equipment, renewable energy sub-systems, and brownfield upgrades requiring open protocols.
