Description
Application Scenarios:
In a high-speed packaging line, coordinating the precise start/stop and speed synchronization of multiple conveyor sections, diverters, and labeling machines is critical. Relying solely on a central PLC for all these high-speed, interlocked decisions introduced network latency and created a single point of failure for the entire line. Engineers implemented a distributed control architecture using the ABB YPP110A 3ASD573001A1 application controller. One YPP110A was dedicated to the entire infeed and metering conveyor section. It directly managed the local S800 I/O modules for photo-eyes, encoders, and motor starters, executing its own fast, deterministic logic for jam detection and speed synchronization. This setup allowed the central PLC to handle higher-level coordination and recipes, while the YPP110A ensured microsecond-level responsiveness locally. The result was a 15% increase in line speed, a dramatic reduction in jams, and the ability for one section to be halted or maintained without stopping the entire production line, showcasing the controller’s role in enabling robust, high-performance distributed control.
