Optimize Drive Braking with ABB SAFT132CBS Circuit Board

The ABB SAFT132 CBS (also designated as SAFT132CBS) is a sophisticated circuit board card that serves as the central control unit for an integrated brake chopper system within ABB’s high-performance AC drives. It represents an evolution from simpler chopper controllers, combining the control intelligence, gate drive, and protection logic for a brake IGBT into a single, advanced module. Its primary function is to monitor the drive’s DC link voltage and actively manage an external braking resistor to safely dissipate regenerative energy, preventing overvoltage faults and enabling controlled deceleration of motors.

Description

Application Scenarios:In a centrifugal test stand for large motors or a high-speed packaging line with frequent stop-start cycles, the drive system is subjected to intense regenerative energy from the inertial loads. Unmanaged, this energy causes the DC bus voltage to spike, leading to drive trips, production stoppages, and potential component damage. The ABB SAFT132CBS board is engineered for this challenge. Integrated into the drive’s power structure, it provides continuous, high-speed monitoring of the DC link. When a motor enters regenerative mode, the SAFT132CBS instantaneously calculates the required braking power and generates precise PWM signals to switch an external IGBT, routing the excess energy to a braking resistor bank. This sophisticated control maintains DC voltage within a safe, narrow band, allowing for rapid, repeatable, and smooth deceleration without faults, ensuring test accuracy and maximizing packaging line throughput.
