In a large chemical plant’s polymer production line, precise control of multiple extruder screw speeds is paramount for product consistency. Each extruder is driven by an ABB ACS880 variable frequency drive (VFD). The plant’s DCS calculates the optimal speed setpoint for each screw based on complex recipes, but it lacked the direct, high-fidelity analog outputs needed to command the drives accurately. The installation of ABB YPK112A 3ASD573001A13 analog output modules solved this challenge. Each 4-channel YPK112A module provided dedicated, isolated 4-20mA speed reference signals to multiple VFDs. This direct interface eliminated signal degradation and noise inherent in previous daisy-chained solutions, providing the drives with a clean, stable, and precise speed command. The result was a dramatic reduction in product thickness variation, improved raw material yield, and a significant decrease in off-specification batches, showcasing the module’s role in enabling precise closed-loop process control.
