Boost PLC Output Capacity: Integrate the ABB XO08R2-A4-0​ Relay Output Module

Imagine a municipal water treatment plant upgrading its chemical dosing system. The existing PLC’s integrated outputs are fully allocated, but the new design calls for automatic control of eight additional solenoid valves that manage the injection of different treatment chemicals. Running individual control cables all the way back to the main control cabinet for each valve would be costly and complex. This is where the ABB XO08R2-A4-0​ module provides an elegant solution. Installed in a local junction box near the valve manifold, it connects via a single PROFIBUS-DP or EtherCAT cable (via a coupler) to the main AC500 PLC. The PLC program simply addresses the module’s outputs. The XO08R2-A4-0​ then reliably translates these commands, using its internal relays to switch the 230VAC power circuits that directly operate the solenoid valves. This decentralizes control, drastically reduces wiring, simplifies troubleshooting, and delivers a cost-effective, scalable expansion.
