Allen-Bradley 1734-OW4 POINT I/O 4-Point Relay Output Module with Isolated Form A Contacts

Product Overview

The Allen-Bradley 1734-OW4 is a four-channel digital contact output module from the Rockwell Automation POINT I/O family (Bulletin 1734). Rather than using semiconductor switches, the 1734-OW4 contains four independent electromechanical relays, each wired as a Form A normally open SPST contact pair. Because every contact is galvanically isolated from the POINTBus backplane and from the other three channels, the module behaves as a set of four dry contacts that simply close or open an external circuit, which makes it one of the most versatile output devices in the distributed I/O range. In a control architecture, the 1734-OW4 occupies one slot to the right of a POINT I/O network adapter such as the 1734-ADN, 1734-AENT or 1734-ACNR, and it exchanges four bits of output data with the controller through the adapter. Each output bit energises one relay coil, closing the corresponding contact pair on the removable terminal block. Since the contacts are not powered from the module, the designer is free to switch 24V DC on one channel and 120V AC or 240V AC on the next, a capability that solid-state output modules cannot offer. This flexibility makes the 1734-OW4 the standard choice wherever loads of mixed voltage, mixed current type or uncertain characteristics must be driven from a single compact node. The Allen-Bradley 1734-OW4 is also valued for the protection it provides to the control system. Isolation rated at 250V continuous and type tested at 2550V DC for 60 seconds separates the field side from the logic side, so voltage transients, inductive kickback and wiring faults on the load side cannot propagate back into the adapter or the PLC. With a 2 A resistive rating per channel, a maximum switching voltage of 240V AC, low 0.5 W power dissipation and an operating range of −20 °C to +55 °C, the module delivers an excellent balance of switching capability, safety margin and cabinet space efficiency for machine builders, system integrators and plant maintenance teams.

Main Features and Advantages

True dry-contact flexibility: The defining advantage of the 1734-OW4 is that its four relays are completely isolated from one another and from the POINTBus backplane. There is no common supply pin to configure and no field power bus to feed, so each of the four channels can switch whatever voltage the application requires. A single module can therefore energise a 24V DC solenoid on channel 0, a 120V AC motor starter coil on channel 1, a 240V AC indicator lamp on channel 2 and a low-current interface relay to a third-party panel on channel 3. For panels with mixed-voltage field devices, this eliminates the need to specify several different output modules or to add interposing relays.Galvanic protection of the control system: The Allen-Bradley 1734-OW4 provides isolation rated at 250V continuous with a type test of 2550V DC for 60 seconds between the field side and the system side. Inductive loads such as contactor coils and solenoid valves generate substantial voltage spikes when they are de-energised; with a relay output, that energy is absorbed by the contact gap rather than being coupled into the module electronics or the adapter. In practice this means the 1734-OW4 dramatically reduces the incidence of nuisance adapter resets and communication dropouts on noisy machines compared with unprotected transistor outputs.Simple, forgiving wiring: Each channel of the 1734-OW4 uses just two terminals on the twelve-position removable terminal block, and the mapping is fixed: channel 0 across terminals 0 and 2, channel 1 across 1 and 3, channel 2 across 4 and 6, and channel 3 across 5 and 7. Because the relay contacts are passive, no field power distributor, common terminal module or voltage terminal module is required alongside the module, which simplifies the bill of material and frees DIN rail space. The removable terminal block also allows a failed module to be replaced without disturbing a single field wire.Low power and low heat: The 1734-OW4 draws only about 80 mA from the 5V POINTBus and dissipates a maximum of 0.5 W, or 1.7 BTU/hr. This light loading means many relay modules can be added to a POINT I/O assembly before the adapter’s backplane current budget is approached, and the minimal heat output allows dense packing inside sealed control panels without additional ventilation.Serviceability in a running plant: The Allen-Bradley 1734-OW4 supports Removal and Insertion Under Power, so a module can be exchanged while the rest of the rack continues to operate. Four yellow output status LEDs provide immediate per-channel indication at the module, complemented by module and network status indicators, which lets a technician confirm whether a load has failed to energise because of logic, wiring or the module itself. With over five million mechanical operations and 100,000 electrical operations at rated load, the relay life comfortably covers typical machine duty cycles when the module is applied within its ratings.Hazardous area and marine approvals: Beyond standard industrial approvals, the 1734-OW4 carries ATEX and IECEx certification for explosive atmospheres, North American Class I Division 2 approval, and ABS and RINA marine registrations. This allows the same part number to be used across general-purpose machines, Zone 2 classified process areas and shipboard installations, simplifying spare parts management for global operators.
