Allen-Bradley 1734-IA4 POINT I/O 120V AC 4-Channel Sinking Digital Input Module

Product Overview

The Allen-Bradley 1734-IA4 is a four-channel AC discrete input module from the Bulletin 1734 POINT I/O family of Rockwell Automation, developed to bring mains-level field signals straight into a distributed I/O station without the cost, wiring and panel space of a conventional rack-based input card. Because the Allen-Bradley 1734-IA4 runs on a nominal 120V AC supply and accepts any source between 85 and 132V AC at 47 to 63 Hz, it allows machine builders and system integrators to sense standard control voltage directly from push buttons, selector switches, limit switches, float switches, pressure switches and motor starter auxiliary contacts, eliminating the interposing relays and extra 24V DC power supplies that a DC-only input module would otherwise demand.Architecturally, the Allen-Bradley 1734-IA4 provides four non-isolated sinking inputs configured as one group of four, each channel carrying its own yellow status LED that mirrors the live energization state of the connected field contact, alongside module and network status indicators that make first-line diagnostics possible without a programming terminal. A continuous 240V AC field-to-system isolation barrier, type tested at 3250V DC for 60 seconds, protects the backplane and the host controller from transients originating on the mains side, while a selectable input filter suppresses contact bounce and AC ripple. The Allen-Bradley 1734-IA4 occupies only 12 mm of DIN rail width and weighs roughly 31 grams, so a dense I/O station can be built inside a small local junction box close to the field devices it serves. Connected through a POINT I/O adapter such as the 1734-AENTR, it is configured from Studio 5000 Logix Designer by means of Add-On Profiles, supports Removal and Insertion Under Power for service without shutting down the segment, and benefits from Automatic Device Replacement, so a spare module can be swapped in and reconfigured by the controller itself.

Main Features and Advantages

Mains-level sensing without interposing hardware: The Allen-Bradley 1734-IA4 accepts a 120V AC signal directly, so field devices already operating at line voltage can be wired straight into the I/O station. This removes an entire layer of interface relays, 24V DC drop supplies and marshalling terminals, cutting both material cost and the number of failure points in the cabinet. For retrofit projects where existing push buttons, motor starter auxiliaries and limit switches are already wired for 120V AC, the Allen-Bradley 1734-IA4 allows the original field devices to be reused without rewiring the whole machine.Wide operating window with well-defined thresholds: Rather than simply tolerating voltage variation, the Allen-Bradley 1734-IA4 publishes both switching boundaries, guaranteeing turn-on above 65V AC and turn-off below 43V AC. Leakage current from long cable runs, illuminated push buttons or solid-state proximity switches therefore cannot hold a channel falsely energized, which is one of the most common causes of phantom input states in AC systems. A 10.6 kΩ input impedance keeps the per-channel load modest, and the 20 ms hardware filter together with a selectable digital filter of up to 65 ms lets the integrator tune the response between fast signalling and strong bounce rejection.Diagnostics that reduce troubleshooting time: Every channel on the Allen-Bradley 1734-IA4 carries an individual LED that follows the real-time state of the field contact, so a maintenance technician can confirm whether a signal has physically arrived at the module before opening a laptop. Module and network status indicators complement the channel LEDs by separating wiring and field-device faults from backplane or adapter communication problems.Distributed architecture benefits: The Allen-Bradley 1734-IA4 draws only 75 mA from the POINTBus at 5V DC and dissipates just 0.50 W, so many modules can be clustered without overloading the adapter or heating the enclosure. Combined with 12 mm module width, RIUP hot-swap capability and ADR automatic reconfiguration, it supports compact, serviceable I/O drops placed near the equipment rather than in a distant central cabinet, which shortens field cable runs and simplifies future line expansion.
