Description
Application Scenarios
In a high-precision chemical batch reactor, dozens of temperature and pressure transmitters send critical 4-20mA signals back to the control room. These signals terminate at an ABB S400 I/O rack, where an ABB YPG106A analog input board digitizes them. The physical connection between the field wiring and the YPG106A board is made via the ABB YPQ101E connection unit. During a plant expansion, an electrician accidentally shorts a 24V DC supply line to a temperature signal terminal on a YPQ101E. The robust design of the terminal unit contains the fault, blowing a fuse on the unit itself and preventing a damaging voltage spike from reaching the expensive YPG106A board. The maintenance team swiftly replaces the fused element in the YPQ101E, restoring the loop without any damage to the core I/O module. This incident highlights the YPQ101E‘s role as a protective, sacrificial interface, safeguarding valuable system components.
