ABB RXSF1 Safety Relay: Engineered for High-Reliability Emergency Circuits

The ABB RXSF1 is a safety relay manufactured by ABB, designed to implement and monitor safety functions in industrial machinery and automation systems. It is a dedicated, positively guided relay that provides a reliable, fault-tolerant interface for safety devices like emergency stop buttons, safety gates, light curtains, and two-hand controls, ensuring a safe and monitored shutdown of hazardous machine movements.

Description

Application Scenarios

On a high-speed robotic welding cell, operators occasionally need to enter the safeguarded space for tool changeovers. A safety gate, equipped with a locking mechanism, protects the area. A standard relay controlling this gate could fail in a way that leaves contacts welded closed, allowing the gate to be opened while the robot is still active—a potentially fatal hazard. The ABB RXSF1 safety relay is installed to monitor this gate. Its dual-channel inputs are connected to the gate’s safety switch. The RXSF1 continuously checks for discrepancies between the two channels (like one switch failing closed). Only when both channels signal “gate closed and locked” does the RXSF1 close its own positively guided contacts, enabling power to the robot controller. If the gate is opened or a fault is detected, the RXSF1 opens its contacts in a monitored, failsafe manner, cutting power and preventing robot movement. Its integrated diagnostics can also trigger a visual or audible alarm, indicating exactly which safety device triggered the shutdown for faster resolution.
