ABB RTAC-01 Digital Extension Module: Expand Drive I/O Capacity

Application Scenarios:In an automated packaging line, a critical cartoning machine driven by an ACS880 drive required integration of multiple safety and sequencing signals. The drive’s standard I/O was quickly exhausted by basic functions (Run, Fault, Speed ref), leaving no capacity for the new safety door interlocks, pneumatic valve feedback signals, and product-in-place sensors needed for an automation upgrade. Running all these signals to a distant PLC cabinet would be costly and introduce latency. The solution was the ABB RTAC-01 Digital Extension Module. Installed directly into the drive’s option slot, the RTAC-01​ provided six additional digital inputs and two relay outputs locally. The safety door switches and sensor signals were wired directly to the module’s inputs, and its relay outputs controlled local warning lights. The drive’s own application logic, now with access to these extra signals via the RTAC-01, could perform local interlocking and sequencing, sending only high-level status (e.g., “Cycle Complete”) to the main PLC. This decentralized approach cut wiring by 40 meters per machine, reduced the PLC’s scan time, and allowed the machine to operate safely even during brief network interruptions. The RTAC-01​ empowered the drive to be a truly intelligent, self-contained control node.
