22A-D8P7N104 PowerFlex 4 AC Drive: V/Hz Control with Slip Compensation, Frame B

Description
The 22A-D8P7N104 is a compact variable frequency drive (VFD) manufactured by Allen-Bradley, a brand of Rockwell Automation, and belongs to the globally recognized PowerFlex 4 series of adjustable-frequency AC drives. Rated at 3.7 kW (5 HP) with 8.7 A output on a 380–480 V AC three-phase supply, this Bulletin 22A drive is engineered as an economical, space-saving motor control solution for machine-level applications such as conveyors, industrial fans, centrifugal pumps, and light material handling — delivering smooth speed regulation through V/Hz control with slip compensation.

Application Scenarios

A regional beverage bottling facility was struggling with premature motor failures on its conveyor line. The existing electromechanical starters caused violent inrush currents and mechanical shock on every start-stop cycle, leading to belt misalignment, gearbox wear, and an average of six motor replacements per year. The maintenance team needed a cost-effective drive that could fit within the already crowded control cabinet and communicate with the plant’s existing Modbus network — without the expense of a full PowerFlex 525 or 753 upgrade.By deploying the 22A-D8P7N104 at each conveyor zone, the plant immediately resolved the issue. The drive’s V/Hz control with slip compensation maintained consistent belt speed even as product load varied, while the integrated RS485 port with Modbus RTU allowed the line PLC to centrally monitor drive status, adjust speeds, and collect fault data across all zones. Thanks to Rockwell’s patented Zero Stacking™ design, the 22A-D8P7N104 units were mounted side-by-side with no air gap in the 40 °C ambient cabinet environment, fitting 18 drives into the space previously occupied by only 9 conventional VFDs. The built-in IGBT brake enabled controlled deceleration of inertial loads, eliminating belt overshoot at line stops. Post-installation data showed a 78% reduction in motor replacements and a 22% decrease in energy consumption through soft-start and optimal speed matching. This directly addressed the customer’s core pain point: achieving reliable, networked motor control on a constrained budget and in a space-limited enclosure.
